What happens in the THSS library?

Collaboration
We would love to collaborate with you and support your classes in their learning!  We can:
  • Co-plan and/or co-teach a unit or lesson alongside classroom teachers (individuals, groups, or departments) in the library or in your classroom
  • Work with teachers and/or departments to select resources, plan units, etc.
  • Work with you to integrate technology into your classes
  • Lead your class or small groups through an exploration of circuit building (Little Bits, MaKey MaKey, Arduino kits, etc.)
  • Lead your class or small groups through an exploration of coding tools (Spheros, Ozobots, Lego Mindstorm, Spark)
  • Work with individuals or groups on teaching and assessment around Core Competencies

Using the Library
We welcome you to book this space for your classes!  We can close it off for your group and are able to seat up to 60 students at a time.  Please come down or send us an e-mail to check on availability for your desired block.  Ideas for using the space include:
  • You could conference with your students individually while a teacher-librarian teaches or supervises the rest of the group
  • Co-teach a lesson with the teacher-librarian or another teacher in the space
  • Provide one or two classes with a chance to work together on an assignment in the library (with or without teacher-librarian assistance)
  • Provide grade eight students with a chance to use the space as a “great hall,” developing a work plan and choosing a task while the classroom teacher(s) and teacher-librarian circulate to provide support.
  • Give book talks to recommend novels for students in your classes then give them an opportunity to explore our collection and sign books out
  • Use the space as an alternate work space or group work space with your class
  • Have students display work exhibit style for others to explore

Resource Selection
We can support your classes by:
  • Providing a lesson on using online resources (including SD42 databases and encyclopedias) and non-fiction books for research and inquiry projects
  • Creating lit kits, book club kits, or suggested reading lists for your classes
  • Suggesting and compiling print and electronic resources
  • Create a virtual resource guide if your students are researching a specific topic.  Click here to see an example of this for a project about substance abuse at GSS.
  • Work with your classes to evaluate resources (fake news vs. real news, selecting reputable websites, etc.)
